This collection consists of six account books, rebound and numbered as part of a larger group of Pennsylvania business records. Book 144.1 dates principally from 1814 and consists of a ledger listing sums paid to men and women for weaving cloth. It lists the yards produced and the value, providing information on the output of cloth per family per year. Account book 145 dates from 1820 to 1827 with loose papers dating to 1839. This ledger lists primarily credits to men and women for weaving and other day labor. Loose items in the book include a property contract, an untranslated German document, and 2 summons signed by Justice of the Peace Henry Smith of Smithfield, Monroe Co., Pa. Account book 146 (1827-1835) was originally signed Henry Smith account book, October 11, 1827, but during the 1890s was entirely pasted over with newspaper clippings. A card dated 1954 indicates the donor, C.R. Russell, was given the account book for a scrapbook in 1896 when he was 11 or 12 years of age. Newspaper clippings are from Monroe County, Pa. and the Delaware Water Gap area. Ledger 147 dates from 1835 to 1840 and lists debits and credit to men for goods and services such as hauling, supplying firewood, farm work, and transportation. Ledger 148 (1854-1860) belonged to William Summers and was dated July 13, 1854, Buttermilk Falls, Monroe County, Pa. The first page includes a statement signed in 1855 turning the accounts listed in the book over to Henry Smith and David Ney. This daybook lists the goods, the amount, and the recipients credited for their labor and a wide variety of handcrafted goods. Account book 149 dates from 1813 to 1825 and lists primarily whiskey, other spirits, and sundries. The first 15 leaves are covered with political cartoons from the 1890s and the last 80 of the approximately 200 leaves are blank.
